In a weird spot. Licensed in Alabama, and the Eastern district of TN not fully licensed in TN but working on waiving in. Took a job with a TN firm because my wife has a great job here as a teacher. TN firm hired me as a paralegal, but inevitably I ended up staffed on many matters, and am helping with bankruptcy cases. So I’m practicing and doing para work, filing, mailing, intakes Etc. my head para treats me like dirt, and loves to yell and curse at me. I’m a lawyer. How do I navigate this mess?

I think a quick and civil way to resolve this would be to ask the head para are they cursing at you? After they respond, you should say please don’t curse at me anymore.

An even quicker way to resolve this is to throw hands

Go get licensed in your JX if you want your paralegal boss to stop treating you like garbage

These attitude issues can go unaddressed for years specially at smaller shops that don’t answer to anyone so just leave

likesmart

In this situation you may have to remind them that you are still a barred attorney and will leave if the behavior continues! Yes, great paras are invaluable but so is your law school knowledge. You just have to be willing to walk away if need be! I am not of a proponent of “throwing my weigh or title around” but that is ridiculous to be treated poorly by someone that would be considered your subordinate in any other situation.

like

But OP’s boss is not a subordinate and OP ain’t barred. Law school knowledge isn’t a pre-req for paralegal work and only marginally more helpful than any other degree/certificate (IMO it’s actually worse, I don’t want a paralegal second guessing my legal judgment)

How long will it take you to waive in? That will determine next steps.

Can you go to HR about your head paras behavior?

Then you need to be mass applying everywhere to get out. This isn’t a situation that’s going to improve at that office for you. PM me if you want direction on the TN market. I’ve practiced here for a decade and lived here my whole life.

If interested in bankruptcy work, then let’s get coffee and talk.

Ok, where are you located? I’m new to the app, how can I message you directly?

Look for an in house role.
