I’m not a staff attorney but I think comp is half and workload is the same
50% of a first year's salary to start and 80% of the billables with bonus available in tiers. (Noncravath - low COL). Room to advance into higher salary bands but not to partner track. Workload is what you ask of it. I know die hard 9-5ers (or 7-3ers) who do nothing evenings and weekends. Others want to max out the hours based bonus (capped at 1950 hrs). I do associate level work, sometimes of record sometimes not. Sometimes one off projects sometimes ongoing case management. And at least in my firm, have the same "meet your hours and we don't care" flexibility that assocs do.
It's the way things are headed I think. Clients don't want to pay $500/hr for someone who doesn't know what a dispositive motion is. We do and we'll do it for half. 🤷♀️
I can't speak for primary mkts but yeah, it's $200-400 depending on experience. I do doc review occasionally but the big scope stuff is done by nonsalary attys in a separate group. We're not a pool of unmotivated idiots like many in this app seem to think, we just have a different perspective on how much family, free time and sleep are worth.
Would love to learn more about what being a staff attorney is like - honestly would consider it if I made a switch
Friend of mine is one at Reed Smith. I haven’t sought specifics, but I get the impression it’s six figures, but under Cravath-scale for a first year. They work late semi regularly, but have their weekends to themselves. Class of 2016.
