I think you are justified in saying no on contacting that past one. And let them call previous other ones if an option.
I do have 3 references which they can contact who are working in the same company. I just don’t want them to contact my HR or management. Do they usually do that or just contact the references?
So generally an employer isn’t required to do anything mire than confirm dates of employment, and if they talk to HR, who knows that, that is all they’re going to get. If they manage to get a supervisor directly, sometimes that supervisor will say more.
Also, an employer generally doesn’t want to say something negative that might be grounds to get sued.
I worked in HR for nearly 5 years. I would say let them contact your previous employer. Make sure they have HR’s contact info ;)
