Is anyone else seeing 'service charges' being added to checks instead of traditional tips, and how is that affecting your take-home pay? My team is worried it's going to the house instead of the staff.

Ugh. I'd be worried about that too. I worked at a restaurant for a bit and we were supposed to all get pooled tips. Always felt like I was getting less than I should have, but I didn't know that for sure so I didn't say anything. Apparently one of my fellow servers did though, because the owner got hit with a class action lawsuit a year after I left. I'm still getting checks from them. Definitely look into it, your management could be doing something just as shady.

We have been seeing it as well and everyone is upset about it. It is definitely affecting everyone's take home pay. It does appear it is going to the house for us.

These are not in replace though of normal tips sometimes they are mandatory which the customer has no choice to pay but that doesn't mean they can not give you a tip on top or the discretionary which they are treated the same as tips but this is up to the customer whether they pay them. Tips now have to go through tax and national insurance checks by HMRC and you have to inform them if you get them directly from customer as that is extra income. If your employer pays you the tip after in your wage it is better for you in terms of admin.
