According to Hoppe and the Hunton family, her dark obsessions did not begin until after she was prescribed a drug to treat her restless leg syndrome, a drug whose known side effects include hypersexuality. Moreover, the elderly doctor who prescribed the drug has had his license revoked.
“Upon substantial medical evidence,” Eppa Hunton V, Hoppe’s father and a lawyer himself, wrote in a letter included in the new court filing, “the charges against Eleanor stem from the medical malpractice of Dr. Paul Spector.”
Hunton’s letter and other revelations included in the filing have caused some to rethink the case, including retired forensic psychologist Jeffrey Fracher. He told The Daily Progress his view shifted “180 degrees” after it was revealed Hoppe had been taking pramipexole, often prescribed under the brand name Mirapex.
“Just Google it,” said Fracher. “You’ll get a ream of hits on how a really troubling side effect of it is hypersexuality.”
“The long and short of it is this just sort of explains everything to me in terms of how this behavior came to be,” he said. “It’s absolutely tragic.”
According to the new court filing, Hoppe’s medical difficulties began in childhood with symptoms that, at age 18, were diagnosed as the result of multiple sclerosis. Among her related conditions from that debilitating neurological disorder was restless leg syndrome, a condition that makes sleep difficult and which brought Hoppe her first prescription for Mirapex.
Hoppe says that she quit taking Mirapex after an early bout with impulsive behaviors. However, she contends that the replacement drug that Spector prescribed required ever-higher doses, so the doctor put her back on Mirapex in the fall of 2022.
“The initial dose given to me was much higher than previously received, and over the next four months my trusted physician doubled my Mirapex intake even as I complained of hypersexuality and manic behavior,” Hoppe told the sentencing judge in a recent letter.
“By February 2023, I lost my job working in a law firm due to erratic behavior and found myself compulsively spending hours daily online in explicit sex chat rooms,” she continued. “During this three-week period, I adopted different hypersexual personas to fit different bizarre conversations that became increasingly extreme and dangerous.”
I’m now convinced she’s innocent. Public defender. Hopefully she gets pro bono assistance or something. This is insane. She lost everything.
Well then they should have gone to trial to argue that defense.
Definitely. But if your family abandons you and you can no longer afford zealous criminal defense representation, you eventually cut your losses. Nightmarish, but also common.
