Has anyone transitioned from partnership tax to another internal group (i.e. consulting)? Was the switch worth it?

Compliance doesn’t interest me like it used to and Partnership tax experience alone really limits exit opportunities.

Is it too late to get experience in another group if you’re already a manager?

My brother has 8 YOE post his Masters with a US bank in their rates trading division as a software developer- managing, supporting and developing software for pricing trade executions, risk management and reporting requirements for the trading desk. He wants to pivot out of banking and maybe look for an opportunity with FAANG or with MBB/Tier2 consulting. Would you take high risk / high reward consulting gig at a small firm? Comp is hourly and project based. Firm has a good foothold in the niche market. Offers lots of flexibility. But no benefits and since it’s project and hourly based it’s feast or famine. If you have a partner (spouse, domestic partner, etc.) and they had a stable job, would it change your perspective of taking the high risk/high reward role?

I currently work in pharma and I never intended to do it long term. But it’s great pay. Very stable. Working on TV. I love my team and creative directors, and it’s likely I’ll get promoted in spring. But there’s another senior role opening on the retail side at my agency. Tougher CDs, a lot less stability, but possibly better opportunities. What would you do? 🆘
