Is being a highly paid freelancer the best possible situation/end goal of this advertising shit? I feel like the autonomy you have over your working conditions as a freelancer would beat the relative lack of control you have in FT roles, especially later on in your career.

So, rich freelancers, do you love your life? Or is advertising wall-to-wall misery no matter what lol

If 300K/yr is rich, yeah I love my job more now than ever before.

I’ve been freelancing and making a pretty decent living for about six years. I’ve never been more involved in my kids’ lives and I make about as much as I did at my last full time gig. I’ve had two years where I’ve made even more. I go into an office maybe once every other month. The work I’m producing isn’t really portfolio caliber stuff, but again, my quality of life has never been better.

I just started freelancing after romanticizing it for years and so far: you don't get to pick your projects (work is work) or set your hours (freelance usually means you're joining during a sprint/rfp/crazy timeline). The pay is like 1.5-2x more but you don't know when the next project will come. On the plus side, no matter how dysfunctional and crazy the project is, you can walk away after the project is over. But you also can't really add freelance work in your portfolio. Granted I haven't done it for a year yet so I'm not sure if perspectives will change the longer you do it.

Also, save for taxes. 💡

Same as CD1. I have been freelancing the last few years and really enjoyed it, don’t envision going back to full time at an agency. But it depends where you are in your career, if you have the network, if you are ok with the uncertainty that comes in between gigs.

Reality vs perception. This is the internet here after all.

Kind of random but I was an athlete in a non-revenue driving sport and I would say our league was pretty competitive. However, I've noticed that for the revenue-driving sports like basketball that our colleagues at Harvard and Yale consistently get better recruits and fare better on a national stage. Given the league's stance on scholarships, wouldn't you expect more parity?

Harvard had a top 10 recruiting classes a few years ago for basketball.

Yale has a recent lax and hockey title

I’m a designer on an in-house design team in the mortgage industry. Our senior designer passed on managing our team and they’ve asked me to fill the role unofficially until the end of the year as training, then make it official.

I don’t know what the previous managers have made and I’m not sure of the range yet, but how would you go about salary negotiations?

What we really need to know is, which clients are yet to have their brand logos dissected and distanced.

How’s your WFH workload, all? This week: Mon: 10 am - 2 am. Tues: 9 am-8 pm. Wed: 10 am-9 pm. Thurs: 10 am - 8 pm. Fri: 9:30 am-8 pm. Sat: 10 am - 7 pm. Sun: noon - 4 pm, then 7 pm - 11 pm.
This ... is ... not ... sustainable! I’m the sole earner and have a kid, so “just quit!” during a pandemic is not it - and “setting boundaries” ain’t easy when I’m always reachable by text/zoom/email.
