If 300K/yr is rich, yeah I love my job more now than ever before.
I’ve been freelancing and making a pretty decent living for about six years. I’ve never been more involved in my kids’ lives and I make about as much as I did at my last full time gig. I’ve had two years where I’ve made even more. I go into an office maybe once every other month. The work I’m producing isn’t really portfolio caliber stuff, but again, my quality of life has never been better.
I just started freelancing after romanticizing it for years and so far: you don't get to pick your projects (work is work) or set your hours (freelance usually means you're joining during a sprint/rfp/crazy timeline). The pay is like 1.5-2x more but you don't know when the next project will come. On the plus side, no matter how dysfunctional and crazy the project is, you can walk away after the project is over. But you also can't really add freelance work in your portfolio. Granted I haven't done it for a year yet so I'm not sure if perspectives will change the longer you do it.
Also, save for taxes. 💡
Same as CD1. I have been freelancing the last few years and really enjoyed it, don’t envision going back to full time at an agency. But it depends where you are in your career, if you have the network, if you are ok with the uncertainty that comes in between gigs.
Reality vs perception. This is the internet here after all.
