A close family member recently passed away and my grief is reflected in my work. I’ve started making careless mistakes, I can’t focus, and I find it impossible to put in a full day’s work. How long did grief impact your research?

Grief is natural and it isn't something we should shy away from. Processing our grief organically is imperative to make sure you're performing well at your job. Is it possible for you to take some time off to reflect on your feelings and coming back to work when you're feeling better?

Grieving in each person is different, several weeks is normal but I recommend you seek help if you feel it is affecting you more than it should. In my case I realized I needed professional help after 6 months. needed professional help after 6 months.

We all grieve differently, so we can't really give you a straightforward answer as to how long it'll take to heal. You can do things to help the healing process like speaking to a professional and taking some time off work but you shouldn't push away the feelings. It's natural to mourn the loss of a loved one

How do you deal with references as a freelancer? Most of my past gigs - I had managers on paper but it was a formality as I led my own work so don't feel comfortable asking them to be a reference.

I am a SC in Deloitte with 12 years of work ex. Amazon recruiter has reached out to me for a Sr. TPM role. I have already cleared HM round. My doubt is as I have heard work culture in Amazon is crazy. Would it be better for me to go for a TPM role instead of Sr. TPM. Not sure how the responsibilities differ between the two roles

Hi Fishes,

General topic of discussion..
What to do when your automated regression suite(nearly 5k) keeps on expanding due to new features and doesn't stabilize due to old scripts breaking due to data issues and new scripts failing due to sync/some script issues.. Any experiences!?

Unpopular opinion - let’s replace “hi, i.m. okay?” with “hello, when you have a moment, can you please [ENTER REQUEST]. Let me know if you have any questions.” You’ve already messaged me so i can’t really say no, can you email me instead? If that’s the case I’d be on do not disturb or offline.

That’s it. That’s the post.

Are any American consultants working in the middle east? Currently, trying to make the transition myself! Grew up in America, but my whole families from the middle east, so I want to do it for a couple of years.

How would I go about this process? Should I join a firm first, then make the transition?

I’ve experienced this!

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

Hello,

The immigration firm(for the new company I’ve accepted offer from) reached out with a link to put in my details for H1 transfer. They specifically mentioned that they won’t support dependent immigration.
My wife is on H4, how do I go about her immigration requirements? Does she need a transfer or amendment on current visa once I get my visa transferred?
Thank you

Hey all, having issues with interviewing this year. I’ve been passed over every opportunity I really want and I’m unsure how to regroup and move forward. I’m really trying to break into method development roles and I haven’t had the opportunity to do so with my analytical experience. A lot of my HPLC and LCMS experience is with already established methods. Any tips?

I have been approached by 3 separate HR people at a startup company to interview for a position. I already have a fulltime job that pays well and I only started 6 months ago too. Anyways, the pay was intriguing and the job was a high level scientific advisor so I did interviews. At the last interview, at the end I was told the job was for management but I prepared for a different kind of interview. I am waiting for an offer or rejection letter. I feel peeved that they wasted my time. Red flags?

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
