I’m moving from Houston to New York City in Jan 2022, any recommendation on specific apartment? I’m thinking about Elmhurst, Astoria, Long Island City. I do see apartment listings on apartment.com from 1,700-2,200 in those areas. But it’s hard to tell by pictures. I will be working near Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan. To me, safety and commute comes first. And then it’s the cost and Laundry facilities. Or should I live in NJ? Thanks!!!

Eh. I told everyone in writing when I was doing IVF and then pregnant to have documentation. (My firm was great to me and I didn’t really expect to be treated badly, but you just never know). I think it’s fine to tell folks via email. You can also note that you’re more than happy to have a call after to discuss coverage for your cases when you go on leave.
Staffed differently if they knew from the start I’d be on leave by May. But I have to tell them now, but it’s only been three weeks and I don’t know anyone well and would feel more comfortable over email. Is that truly awful form?
I think that’s fine and you can copy HR, isn’t any reaction partly on them for instructing you to wait to tell? Have you been fully remote?
Ahh makes sense. All the more reason I think an email is fine!
Thanks, all! I sent the email and it went very well, feeling relieved.
From a managing shareholder perspective, I don’t think HR did you any favors by telling you to wait to disclose your pregnancy. Yes, there may have been a chance that you might not have been hired for that position because they the business needed someone who could immediately fill the role and not be out on leave. It may have been a business necessity to have a person who is available, but HR made it look like you were concealing your pregnancy to get the job. Even though that is not the case, some people are going to feel blindsided by the fact that now in 2 1/2 months you’re going to be out, and that seems everything goes well with the pregnancy and you were able to work up until your due date. I would definitely copy HR on any emails.
Yeah, so, it’s quite literally illegal to force a job applicant to disclose a pregnancy or refuse to hire someone because they’re pregnant. This post isn’t about the job interview process. But “concealing a pregnancy to get the job” is the attitude that necessitated the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.
But also, people go out on leave all the time, whether new hires or not. There’s always a business need for them. Businesses figure it out.
OP, I would maybe tell the partners that HR advised you not to disclose when you started working though, because unfortunately some people do apparently think like EP1.
