Why do unethical businesses often succeed? How can “ethical” leadership stand on a moral high ground while not being able to reward their employees to the degree that “unethical” businesses can?

because capitalism is predicated on the exploitation of labor to exact surplus value from workers

“He who was previously the money owner now strides out in front as a capitalist; the possessor of labor-power follows as his worker. The one smirks self-importantly and is intent on business; the other is timid and holds back, like someone who has brought his own hide to market and has nothing else to expect but a tanning”

I think that unethical companies fail, or perform below peers, over the long run -- study after study shows that ethical companies outperform the market and their peers. Now, for a time, unethical companies may appear to be successful because they are very short term focused, but it's a house of cards -- and when it falls, everyone who worked at those companies gets punished.

Start with Theranos. Look at Wework.

DO YOU JUST ASSUME THE COST OF YOUR MARKETING ACTIVITIES? I am looking to allocate their cost in the marketing budget in a way that won't rely on several layers of assumptions. How do you reliably estimate the cost of different marketing activities (email, social, web, etc) when you don't have specific people or tools allocated to each function and costs are spread across many channels? Ads seems the easiest, but even then there's time and overheads... I've been looking for a reliable model.

I have 9.5 yrs of experience and am currently level 62 in Microsoft. I feel I should be Senior SE in Microsoft (level 63) but when I got microsoft offer last year the HR said it is the maximum they can give. Fixed base is 28 LPA. There is an upcoming appraisal cycle in September, so I wanted to ask how much can I expect Microsoft to adjust the base salary in this appraisal cycle ( given my performance was decent) ?

Ethics is a topic in computer engineering that I have had to dance around. In a federal capacity with a security clearance ethics didn't mean anything.

Hey guys, newbie here please be gentle with me 😅. I have recently accepted an offer but my gut tells me it might not be the best for my future move. Do you think I should start looking and make use of the shorter notice period during my probation?

I could use some advice on this situation. I’ve been working for a small family owned business in Toronto Canada for about 4months. I’ve noticed a lot of unprofessional behaviour since I’ve started (yelling at workers infront of customers) I’ve bounced around different positions so much that the owner blames 98% of stuff on me when something isn’t done, even if it’s not my responsibility anymore.A week ago I asked for an employment contract to get this straight but nothing yet. What do I do?

How is AirBnB ethical when its business model exists through legal arbitrage? It has functionally created rental property service without being subject to the same taxes and liability insurance of a regular hotel company due to the dubious claim of “It’s on the web.”

Hi everyone, wanted to come back and talk about the work environment at the Washington Redskins/Football Club -- the Washington Post story was pretty jaw dropping. One troubling angle was the use of NDAs to stifle victims. NDAs have for too long enabled bad behavior to continue, and it's time companies pledged to stop using NDAs in settlements with victims -- the coverup is worse than the bad acts. I think Warren torpedoed Bloomberg's campaign due to his use of NDAs. Thoughts?

As someone who is virtually our only compliance person at a mid-size company, I often get questions for legal advice. I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advice (my disclaimer), but I do look at the situation from a compliance/policy/process lens and urge to consult legal always. I feel as though it discredits me and my advice because I’m not an attorney. How can I better differentiate compliance from legal and still provide valuable advice?
