You need to have a good amount of savings and plan things out if you want to move first. I’ve seen friends do it successfully by leaning on their church community, they’d network through their church and find jobs that way because the support was really strong. Personally, I always try to find a job first before moving somewhere new. I usually start by networking online with people in the city I want to move to, then apply to as many jobs as I can, ideally with referrals. That’s what I did when I moved to the U.S. from Brazil. I searched for Brazilians living in Idaho, where I wanted to live, and it helped me understand the area better and even get some job leads.
Happy to help!
For me, I saved up enough to live for a couple of months while I looked for a job in my new city. I thought it would make more sense to find a job first before moving, but nobody would even consider me because I'm from out of state. Even if I included a cover letter stating that I was relocating, it didn't matter. Couldn't get a single interview. So I saved up, moved, and then it started applying.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I guess I need to save first before moving
Unless you have a few months savings then it would be better to get a job first then move. Apartments are going to ask for proof of income anyway so if you can't provide that they won't approve you. I would look for jobs online and apply or see if anyone in your network knows of openings in the city you want to go to and can refer you.

This is helpful. Thank you!
It is a Catch 22 situation. It's better to have a place to live first, but if you don't have a job in the area that may be difficult. And it's hard to find a job if you're not living locally. In normal times, it might be possible to move and live on some savings for a brief period until you find a job. But in today's world, with all the chaos and unpredictability we're facing, that's a tough thing to commit to, as you could be out of work for a long time.

Yes, the unpredictable nature of the world is scary. Anyone can end up homeless. Its such a sad world
