I feel like writers are seen as more valuable. AI and juniors can make the comps but ideas are still at a premium. I say this as an art director by trade who resents this attitude.
Art people seem to me to have far more utility. But maybe I'm wrong.
I honestly think both high quality roles are extremely valuable and in demand. It does seem like there are less senior ADs than writers at times. But for the most part I’d say there is good demand for both things. And AI doesn’t do either of them very well. (Yet)
Writers vary greatly in quality and adaptability in ways that firms feel they can simply require more revisions or free work to weed out and find the right talent. One of the most revered writers I've worked with was a hack who repurposed ideas from reddit and stole copy from foreign campaigns - he was later ousted and those like him impact the perception of all of us.
Art people can submit samples and it's either the right vibe or it isn't. I wish I were more artistically inclined, but from my experience, too many firms readily devalue writer contributions to the point that the barriers are far too high for decent writers ro engage with, meaning they draw in less experienced or talented writers. Those who shine develop an ego and lose sight of the skills that got them there, its a vicious cycle.
