Also a black guy, I worked at a ~100 person boutique and was literally their first black hire like 2 years ago
It's super fucked up, but I guess we can find some comfort in thinking of ourselves as trailblazers
A1 for thinking black people are some ignorant group who don’t apply to corporate America. I truly haven’t heard anything so stupid in a minute.
I think as a whole there is room to go for POC in corporate America. The only reason I knew about consulting was thanks to House of Lies and going to a PWI undergrad business school with a heavy recruiting presence from big4 and MBB. I did some Uber driving in undergrad and picked up 2 accounting students from an HBCU that had never heard of the Big4 so there are some gaps.
Woooowwwww. gaps or craters? I couldn’t imagine an Accounting student today not knowing the big four. That just encourages me to do even more to reach out. That makes me sad.
It’s not you, there’s not a lot of us out here.
It’s not a KPMG or consulting thing, it’s a problem in pretty much all white collar professions. Black and women are under represented compared to their proportion of the population. Then when you discuss leadership roles, most groups are severely underrepresented
Where are you located? I'm in DC and it's a lot of us in the area
Interesting, I've never experienced that in metropolitan cities. There's tons of connect groups though
Join Accenture or EY! I typically see black consultants in these firms
Out of curiosity, out of 10 consultants how many would you expect would be black?
Great question…..
I have only seen and work with one black guy at one of the largest firms
Years at Deloitte, D3? That’s a hyperbolic statement in my own experience
We have several POC at our consultancy firm. I certainly hope none of them are feeling as unwelcome or unaccepted as you are. How would you recommend approaching this?
POC is different than black. @ OP there is a bowl for Black consultants you can join to hear about others experiences... It's a small number no doubt, but you are not alone
Have seen very few black people at Deloitte as well. Can’t speak for MBB but Big 4 recruits a lot at large (mostly white) state schools with nepotism playing a major part as well. I agree it’s long past time to make changes and I think Deloitte is genuinely working on it.
There’s a lot at Deloitte especially if you’re in black cities. But, I can say I’ve worked at other firms where I was the only black person in a room of 20+ people
THIS !!!
I'm black. I've seen plenty people of all color. When I was at EY half of my team was black. I now work an 8a contract and work with a very diverse group of people
Also, People of color is not the same as Black. I wish people would stop using POC in discussion about black people.
At my old firm there weren’t a lot of POC’s. Most of the diverse talent is snatched up by the top firms.
In my start class at BCG it was well over 40% POCs
Everyone on my team is Black but me. I think it depends a little on geography and service line. Still an underrepresented group in consulting though
KPMG C&O
We got a few, but definitely feel what you are feeling.
I have been the only black man in my office since I started about 3 years ago. I have met other black men across my firm but I’ve been the only one in an office of about 75 people. We have a recent hire who I think may be mixed but I am not sure.
What firm?
I have been on 3 projects at my time at D and have had at least one black person on each. I have had more minorities and women on my teams than white folks. Just my scenario obviously but I have been fortunate to see the diversity!
My Partner on my current project is black, and have worked with several before in my experience at Deloitte and now at PwC. Can’t speak for other firms but these two both have had Diversity and Inclusion initiatives to address the hiring and retention of diverse talent.
My start class at Accenture in DC was about 30% black! Might also depend on the city - DC population is about 45% black whereas, say, LA it’s only about 8%.
There are a lot of Black people in the EY Atlanta office. but I totally recognize that this experience is a lot different than what you would usually get in consulting.
This is more diverse than college.
