Wait, you’re asking people to take responsibility for their own interactions? Accountability is a bad word…
I deliberately made my response in a way that left it up for interpretation.
Here’s my hopefully less ambiguous take:
As a manager I try to lead my team with kindness. Which means that I hold the team to high standard of performance, do everything I can to remove obstacles that get in their way, expect them to tell me when they encounter such obstacles, push them to branch out and expand their capabilities, give them opportunities to do just that, help them find the learnings when failure happens so that they don’t make the same mistakes twice, communicate transparently, and highlight their accomplishments up the chain.
This approach is great because it puts ownership of their performance on them but also provides the safety net they need to walk with confidence.
It would not work for some of the folks who comment on here about their awful managers because it relies on my team choosing to push themselves to excel and being willing to tell me when they are struggling. It seems that many folks here would be unwilling to do that based on their posts here.
