Is it worth it to take a PM role with a ~25% pay cut? I was at above the band for my years of experience and at one of the highest paying non-AI companies before. Also I got laid off a few months ago and wasn't dealing with the lack of structure/income well

Still above $200K and can live comfortably where I'm at. Single, no dependents, 20s

I think it depends on what you mean by worth it? Is the role not a fit or just the comp? Technically it’s no longer a pay cut since your current comp is $0. If the role is a good fit I would take it and push for more $$ there or ask about future advancements. You can always pursue more money once you have a job if you want but the market is volatile right now so that higher paying offer may never come.

This. Wild to think of the role as a 25% pay cut when your current income is $0.

I’d say go for it, but also realize what was handed to you previously to some extent - > $200K in your 20s.
I guess from the post it was working at Bain, or was it a FAANG? $200K in the bay area definitely goes a lot less than elsewhere, but still.

The market is pretty much utter crap right now. A fried at AWS for a good long time still knows one of their solid guys that was let go and is still looking a year+ later, so even the ‘ideal credentials’ candidates are having issues scoring a decent job in many cases right now.

If the $ keeps you at or above comfort level, do it. You’ll still have the ‘logo gig’/FAANG on your resume and you can choose to continue looking or restart again when/if the market starts to pick back up without burning through savings and the like. You can also discuss with the company making the offer if there’s a path to re-evaluate salary in e.g. 6 months or some time period, just be careful on how much you push, as there are some out there right now that literally retract an offer for what is usually ‘normal negotiations.’. Good luck!

Take the job. Can always jump to something better-paying later.

Yea definitely take the job. You can always keep looking after you start. A job is better than no job at all, especially in this economy. Especially if you are single and can still live comfortably as you said.

I would suggest, accept that offer. You can keep exploring, until you find your dream job. Economy is not yet stable.

Received an offer for a Product Manager role from a midsized financial services company for $120k base + 15% bonus. Currently making $130k + 15% bonus in consulting with 4 yoe. Is this a good offer? Should I ask for more base or signing bonus? Or is this pretty fair? Very inexperienced in salary negotiations.

I started a new job as an “office manager” at the end of January. The duties seem to align more with those of an EA, and I’m ok with that. Except my boss is a control freak. He scolds me over every little thing, how I load the dishwasher, maybe I didn’t push my chair in. Last week he told me I needed to work on my appearance. I was shocked. I bought all new clothes from Ann Taylor that are perfectly acceptable for business casual. He hates me. Move on ASAP or try to stick it out ?

I need advice. I moved into product management under a year ago to an early stage startup. The first few months went well, but the last 5 have been chaotic. It feels like we’re becoming more sales led, there are too many pivots (I expected some) our roadmap is becoming influenced by sales/ceo. Essentially, we’re trying to do much. It’s happening so much I’m starting to lose confidence in the company/strategy. It’s also causing me anxiety…

Would folks be open to participating in a “PM Office Hours” style discussion?

Flexible on format etc; here’s what I’m thinking:
- We choose a particular problem for a week (/month?) which a lot (all?) PMs face regularly. E.g. “stakeholder mapping”
- we have a “Fishbowl Live event” where we (practicing PMs) can discuss what we have seen work / not work/ brainstorm solutions for someone with a specific problem.

The idea is to provide multiple peer perspectives, and hopefully something useful
