Not exactly answering your question, but the reason I haven’t ever considered moving TO product marketing is because it’s so tactical and you’re questioned every day, week, month on why you’re not meeting your numbers, or why you’re exceeding your numbers and whether or not you can look into your crystal ball that doesn’t exist on what the future looks like. It’s not the cadence I’m looking for in my career.
Though I can see how it can be rewarding to be creating something and seeing the impact in such a short cycle too.
Yes. I wasn’t necessarily targeting product marketing at the time. I was just moving to a smaller town and a product marketing role was the first I could find when looking for a new job. Turns out I enjoy it a lot more.
I personally found myself spending much more time collaborating with the sales team as a PMM, whereas PM spends way more time collaborating with engineering. And for me, I like working closer to sales and the customer.
PMM project timelines also seem to be shorter vs PM. For example, PM might work for over a year to develop and commercialize a product. During that time PMM might update messaging on the website, create a sales playbook, work on case study, or a variety of other shorter projects.
The main downside is that PM might get more exposure with executive leaders and plays a more influential role in shaping business strategy.
What kind of move would plan?
