Is Permalancing the new way companies are avoiding the cost of employees? I’ve been a contractor at this large company for three years, doing the exact same work as the FTEs for 70% of the pay and zero benefits. They keep renewing me for six months at a time, and I’m starting to feel like a second-class citizen. I don't get the holiday parties, I don't get the stock options, but I sure as hell get the same Jira tickets.

Personally I liked being a contractor. I liked not having to accept the company culture or be required to attend all the all-hands meetings. Holiday parties are overrated. What you call being an outsider I call being an independent. And besides, at least you've got a job. I'd wager there's a lot of people in this bowl who would love to be in your position.

They definitely do that because it’s cheaper. Not fair to you, but in this market, I honestly would take anything.

Used to be you got paid a lot more as a contractor, to account for the higher risk, shorter notice periods, no training, pension, lower liability for employer, etc and the fact that in principle you were more expert like an independent consultant & this could hit the ground running. Back then I knew people who’d been contractors in the same role at the same company for 10-20+ years.

How does one most effectively make the transition into management from an Individual Contributor?

I've been an individual contributor for 4 years in Tech, have 8 years of experience total. I'm finding it difficult to make the management transition despite having management experience, performing beyond expectations, and having a genuine passion for enablement and development.

I'd appreciate any success stories or pointers you can offer in regards to this transition.

I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.

I have a question, I got a contract role through a recruiter. Initially the recruiter offered the hourly pay rate which was the minimum in my range. Now I got an offer from the company. Now without me asking her she increased the hourly wage to the maximum range I asked. Which makes me doubt if the company increased it or she knew the rate all along but gave me the lower rate ?
