Is US democracy a failed experiment? Elections are determined by swing states. Oligarchs spend billions. There's separation of powers, but the President appoints SC justices. There's Congress but they need to tow the party line to get re-elected. Universities are state organs: they all receive fed funding. Private companies must tow the party line: the DOJ can always launch a probe, 100% tariffs can destroy you. Not even 250 years in, unstable, and divided, feels like the writing is on the wall.

It hasn’t failed but it’s closer than it should be. Some major structural reforms are needed, starting with campaign finance. We’re in a dangerous place and not enough Americans appreciate that.

One problem without an obvious solution is that party loyalty has become more important than loyalty to/preservation of the institution/branch in which one serves. That problem is most acute in the GOP since it’s a cult, but one hopes that diminishes once Trump is dead or out of office.

Don't worry, having to deal with muppet politicians will make you smarter as a people. Natural selection. 😂

Typical lib hysteria. Other countries like Belarus, Turkmenistan and Somalia have similar “autocratic” governments to us and are doing fine.

People only care about the economy. If people can have a viable and healthy lifestyle, no one cares what type of government is practiced. Its when the economics of the people are threatened, is when we care about type of Governance.

Churchill: "Many forms of government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst for of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

Smart guy.

It’s not right vs. left or Dems vs. GOP. It’s the hyper rich vs. everyone else. We need to tax them before they take it all from us.

The US is not a real democracy and never was.
As a minimum the changes needed for it to be a democracy are:
1. No private funding of any kind to any politician and political party
2. No decision making power in the hands of one individual
3. Complete separation of the branches of government
4. Ideally more than 2 parties

This is the real problem, the ‘system’ is the issue not the ideal. Democracy isn’t really happening in the US given all the issues with lobbying, self interest, concentration of power, etc etc. the super rich control the whole system and the richer they get, the more they suck power away from the people as they people are forced to turn over more of their wealth to them. Same thing is happening in the UK. Nothing will change until the rich are taxed more (on assets/wealth not income)….. it doesn’t trickle down and you can’t stop these megalomaniacs from wanting more and more.

Reminder that we are a republic, not a democracy.

likefunnyhelpful

@c2 a republic is not necessarily a democracy.

I’d say: no. Democracy not a failed experiment. US democracy is, though.

like

Once you understand that US, in reality, is not a country but a corporation, everything happening becomes crystal clear.

like

Your main premise is incorrect. The US is not a democracy. It is a representative republic. Many of the issues in the country are because of TOO MUCH democracy and a move away from what made the US great for so many years. More government is NOT the answer. Crony capitalism is NOT capitalism and this is another major area where the country has gotten off track. The solution is not MORE government or socialism. The answer is always more Liberty!

likefunny

Also less reliance of private equity and more Government-Private collaboration. Our government has sold off our country's resources to the select few hence we no longer own anything and are not forever endebted to the Lords or I mean Oligarchs for resources that were never theirs to begin with. Now they control; housing, water, food, every basic need for survival.

Yes I don’t believe in democracy anymore

funny

Do you not beleive in Democracy or Capitalism? I think unmanaged Capitalism is what has eroded Democracy. Don't think Democracy is the issue, its uncontrolled Capitalism.

like

It was never a democracy. We’re pretty sure we can re-elect non consecutive presidents twice. Then we can elect JD twice. I promise Democrats will not rebuild a compelling platform or find a leader that can win.

Delete this please - it’s very disrespectful to President Trump and his family.

We all know that the approved succession plan is: President Trump II 2024-28, Trump III 2029-2033, Don Jr I 2034-38, Don Jr II 2039-43, Baron Trump I 2044-48

Stop this talk of JD and Elon NOW

funnylike

The rich have gotten way too wealthy and can influence everything.

Let’s say Elon spent $500M to finance trumps campaign. Sounds like a lot but it is basically pennies compared to the 10s of billions his net worth increased from Tesla stock appreciation.

And there are many examples of that, mostly corporations and favorable tax laws. But that’s capitalism for you.

You've been tricked by George Soros and your nutty professor. If it's a failed experiment, then why did 15 million illegal immigrants pour across our borders in the last four years from over 45 different countries?

funny

Because they come from countries that are failed on multiple dimensions. Most of which are failed also thanks to the US having put in place dictatorships solely to protect the interests of its billionaires of the time, in several cases, literally for bananas!

Not sure the data supports ‘failure’… could it be improved? Most definitely. But I’d say the US shouldn’t be in a category of failed states (yet anyways)

Post Photo

So you could say it’s developed a great system to allow businesses and the ultra wealthy to exploit natural resources (including human capital) to their advantage. No doubt there’s great wealth in the US, but the system supports a concentration of that wealth and unfortunately, those that benefit from that concentration, more often than not, tend to be horrible, selfish people.

Not just the U.S. Democracy in the West is now just a slogan but barely practiced. Live in Canada and we have an authoritirian style of economy and governance whereby a couple of Oligarchs control the economic landscape with the King Aka Prime Minister gets to dictate laws that makes everyone's lives worse. The fact we no longer have public referendums on huge national topics like 'Going to War'. An elected Official cab single handledly take a nation to war even if the people of that nation are against it.

Tried this Santorini retailing for $40. Very concentrated but can’t say I was blown away by it. Volcanic terroir dominates almost to the point of obscurity, and it had strong lemon notes, hints of quince, and sea salt. It clashed with Mexican food (hey I knew that beforehand but didn’t think it would clash THAT bad, and usually pair Mexican with Riesling or Gewürztraminer) but I’m going to Greece soon and wanted to drink Greek wine. I drank half at a BYOB, took the bottle home(cont’d)
