Rising Star
54% of Americans read below a 6th grade level. I wouldn’t say it’s falling through the cracks as much as there’s just a low bar for reading comprehension in the US. I’ve worked with honors kids in Philly who’d never read a novel in school.
That story is an outlier, she was also known to need special education and got through school by using apps to convert text to voice and vice versa. So it's not like there are a lot of high school grads who are completely illiterate. But, it's true that most Americans read at a fairly low level. I get emails at work that are just abysmal, and they're from educated people. Americans used to pride themselves on being highly literate, but that seems to have faded away.
Absolutely agree — it’s heartbreaking and infuriating. We put so much weight on diplomas as signals of readiness, but clearly, they don’t always reflect real skills. If this is happening to someone who graduated with honors, it makes you wonder how many others are quietly slipping through the system.
I wonder how factual this is though.
