Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Wait till their offer and ask for 20% more. HR has bs bands and the group head or level below can sign off on your offer. Make them work for you.
Unsure of your title but unless you are the only person in the world with the skills for the job I would lose your big head. Every job in the world has a sole finalist; do you know what that’s called? The first person that gets offered the position.
If by some chance it doesn’t work out in negotiations with you they will either reach out to second or third choices or simply relist the job until they find another candidate.
Had you already discussed salary expectations before you learned you were the finalist? If so, you don't have much leverage, because your salary expectations are probably one of the reasons you made it this far.
What risks goodwill isn't negotiating, it's doing it in a way that comes off as unserious. As long as you seem to be operating in good faith, and what you're seeking is within the realm of the possible, you probably won't engender any bad feelings. When companies become offended or even rescind offers is when someone starts getting over their skis.
Definitely negotiate but don't be a sleazy opportunitist about it. You should go in like an honest candidate with researching the average salary, responsibilities, and years of experience to determine a reasonable expected range for an offer. Also look at the benefits too, the industry, company reputation, etc. All of that should drive your negotiation approach not that you are "only" finalist. Congratulations, good luck, and negotiate like a pro rather than someone with bad character that they wouldn't want to hire.
