Yeah I feel like this in a lot of my interviews recently and it's made me wonder if the hiring teams are already decided on an internal candidate but have to entertain the external interviews. I've noticed this the most when I feel like they're just reading a list of questions and not really hearing my answers, like the lights are on but nobody's home kinda vibes.

I don't usually know right away but sometimes I do get a sense of it. You can kind of tell if they are excited about you or not. I am sorry you had that experience though.
Yes. Sometimes you can tell that the interview is just because they have to interview so many people. If the posting is internal, odds are you are not in competition unless you have already been selected. I recently had one in which I knew I was out ten seconds into the interview. Needless to say, not bothering to apply as. long as that person is the hiring manager.
