I told myself if they pull the offer over a polite question, that’s a red flag anyway. That mindset made it easier to speak up.
I agree. Another point is that they may respect you for speaking up. If you feel strongly about your monetary worth, don’t back down. Nobody but you can make your worth known. Remember that if something is too inexpensive, people think there must be something wrong with it and will oftentimes purchase the more expensive option. I would think this would also play out in lowball compensation offers. If your value is greater than what you have been offered, politely educate them.
One suggestion I was given about negotiating your compensation if you hate taking money as much as I do, is to negotiate your vacation time, which is still a salary raise because you are being paid for days you didn’t work. The person who advised me about this says that businesses will usually be happier to give more vacation time , compared to more money. He also told me that he had never started a new job without at least three weeks of vacation promised from the first year on the job. I like this alternative to asking for more money. Some companies expect that you will negotiate the salary, so they low ball the offer so they have more room to appear reasonable and negotiable. Do your due diligence and find out how much other people are being reimbursed for the same role but with different companies. That way you’ll know if the offer is low for the industry or low to you. If you made significantly more at your last job, it is very hard to take a lower salary. However, truly liking your job, feeling passionate about your role, and even looking forward to going to work , rather than dreading it, is priceless, in my opinion.
