There’s two different issues here
1. Someone not liking you
2. You not fixing typos you were supposed to and not meeting your deadline.
95% is still a missed deadline, especially if you didn’t communicate about it beforehand. And that’s a totally different issue than copy mistakes that should have been caught in proofreading (which I wouldn’t count as your fault). Not fixing copy mistakes you were warned about is also a big issue if that’s what the second situation was.
The buck stops with you on the typos. Stop blaming other people.
Written up and then dismissed within a week? That doesn’t seem right.
You are either an asset or a liability to a company. You described clearly how you are a liability and not at all how you are an asset. From this post alone I would have let you go, too.
But the 10 years of experience was not with them. Mistakes in the first week AND someone doesn't like you? Yeah, no company is going to sink more time into that. It sucks for you but why would you want to be in a company where the management dislike you and mistakes happen in your team?
Rising Star
There’s a lot of “I didn’t know” “it was someone else’s job” happening here. Your project, your deadline, your responsibility.
Having said that I agree with VP1, being written up and dismissed within a week sounds off. New employees need a grace period to learn and adjust to the new environment. You can try to complain to HR but there probably isn’t a whole lot they will do for you if you’ve already been terminated.
Sorry OP.
I am sorry to hear that this happened. None of what you described sounds like a fireable offense to me. If I were your manager, I would provide feedback so that you could work through it. I expect new employees to make some mistakes. I hope you find a new job (and a better manager) soon.
While this was a new job, I was there for 2.5 months. In the 2.5 months, I made the address error and as stated before there were a couple of uncorrected typos in maybe 3 emails in 10 weeks. The deadlines not being met we’re not just my deadlines, they were team deadlines. This was a new client and the client had “lost faith” in the entire team. I’m just the one they decided to throw under the bus.
Very short timeline. Seems like weird situation. Though those mistakes sound trivial, they are your mistakes nonetheless. Regardless, sounds like there was a some sort of poor fit between you & the mngrs / company.
I am 1 of 9 that hadn’t completed a training seminar but the only one the District Manager-DM sent an email to, the 5% of the project not completed was due to information I needed from the OpsMgr and GM. Then found out that the DM expected me to do the same project for the Ops Mgr’s area which I knew nothing about. The final straw was earlier this week I had to make a judgement call that I stand behind-it was the right decision. But the DM used this to terminate my employment. Others say I should report the DM to HR, but I don’t think it will do me any good even though they could easily transfer me to a different location.
It sounds like maybe you were hired under the impression your skillset was more than it may be, and that may just be a miscommunication during hiring or an over-representation of your experience. I always say, if you are going to miss a deadline - the product better be flawless. It sounds like your missed deadline plus incomplete work, with numerous errors was just too much for management to accept. I'm sorry this happened, use it as a learning experience for the next job.
There's not enough information here to understand the full picture. You may want to get some legal advice to see whether you have any route for an unfair dismissal type claim especially if you have been treated differently to others. But you may just want to find another role at a better firm which suits you better - this one sounds like one to avoid!
I have the same situation your in , all I do is try to re-read again make sure it's all spelled correctly I even try to bother other receptionist to see if they can proof read for me. Sometimes it helps and then I get like you discouraged of my work
Why doesn't the DM like you when you're only a week in? You're better off out of there! Good luck job hunting. With your decade of experience, the odd bad apple is bound to happen at some point, sadly.
Honestly it sounds like the best situation you know quickly and you can move on fast. Much better for both sides than dragging out a situation that is a bad fit for an extended period of time. With your experience and qualifications I’m sure you can get another position quickly.
Hey OP, don’t sweat it. You know what kind of 🚩 🚩🚩 to look for when interviewing for another job. You’ll find something with a better fit and you’ll feel much happier and accomplished. Best of luck to you!!
What company is this so I know Not to work there
Not saying but it’s the biggest company of its kind. It’s a niche business that is huge in Florida and requires special licensing to be a Manager. I have 10 years experience and have a higher certification than just the required license. I found out the day after that the OpsMgr is going to take the required education and take the test to get licensed. I say good luck there, I know 2 very intelligent people that it took several months of studying and 3 tries to pass the test. It is also illegal to act as a manager without licensing.
