I would just be careful about recruiters who sell you freelance to permanent positions. Oftentimes it doesn’t lead to perm.
Do you have healthy savings? Solid network? The freelance market is tight right now so if you make this jump, you’ll need to be prepared for lean times and droughts of work. Insurance is via ACA and is no longer subsidized by your employer, unless you have a spouse whose coverage you can jump on. It’s also very expensive. Retirement savings? You’ll have to do your own — no 401k with employer match.
Re: burnout, you might want to look into FMLA and taking a mental health leave before jumping ship. Those burnout problems will remain, freelance or not.
If it’s not at least a year. Even though I had a 12 month role that was supposed to convert. It’s no guarantee company had layoffs. However, I’m using my experience to try & leverage another role at the company. I say this to say freelance is about making the connections. Having your name in the system. It’s the long game. Especially, if you’re burnt out. Good luck 🍀 & go for it.
Recruiters LOVE dangling the full time carrot to those seeking it…but rarely does it come to pass. Especially in this market.
Unless you have a stable of agencies who call you in regularly for freelance I’d stay where you are.
Fwiw, I was turning down those contract offers because I thought my agency job was stable and I just got laid off with barely any severance. Soooo, even if you dont think you’re prepared to leave your full time job keep the lines of communication open with the recruiters cause you never know!
