“Just deal with it.” No, if it’s a bad work environment or if I REALLY don’t like something, I’m going to make a change, not suffer through it.
I prioritize self-care, balance and creativity. Just because I left work on time to go to the gym instead of staying for overtime doesn’t mean I’m not serious and committed to my job.
Low pay, little to no benefits, the extreme hierarchy. The work competition is growing and unless they do something, good employees are not going to work at agencies
THIS. Say it louder for the people in the back. Totally agree.
When older execs/clients talk about wanting to target gen z but don’t hear out/give any say to the team members that are actually gen z….
Retweet retweet retweet
… are you me? Lol
Small talk. Can’t stand it - just get to the point
The forced sense of peer pressure and “community”. For example, pressuring people to go to happy hours after an 8-10 hour day, especially since I barely drink ever.
This response comes from a baby millennial/elder gen z.
Compensation at associate levels
Failure of upper-management to understand the sheer accessibility of creative production nowadays. The gatekeeping the industry has done is actively working against it. Great ideas are everywhere, and now anyone and everyone with an idea have the means to bring it to life. Adapt or die.
Work/life balance and toxicity surround ‘paying dues’. Had a few mentors explain that since the job/client is supplying you a paycheck, you’re at their beck and call. Um, no.
Lack of cultural fluency. Our generation is globally minded. Not only do we pull ideas beyond our own experiences and heritage, we extend beyond the scope of our environment for inspiration and entertainment. Many of us are just as likely to reach for an Indian or Chinese television show as we are an American one. We have friends all around the world.
Zennial here 👋 and BOY do I have a laundry list for you…
- Corporate gaslighting... I can’t count the amount of times I’ve been told things like, “this is how it is everywhere” and “working XX hours/week is normal” and “only this kind of work will make you successful”
- Unethical (racist, classist, ableist, homophobic, heteronormative, etc) creative work that gets approved by the big rainmakers even with internal pushback from younger, more diverse staff. Is it that hard for you ego to listen to someone below your pay grade for once??
- Performative DEI and L&D “efforts”
- Severe pay disparities + lack of transparency and fairness with promotions/raises
- Senior staff that take credit for your ideas and work
- Being forced to work with (or pitch) clients that I have moral/ethical conflicts with
- Pointless meetings that have no direction or value-add to the project or task at hand
- HR violations and crossed boundaries galore - sexual misconduct, homophobic and racist comments, execs following you on social media
- Crucial vacancies aren’t filled after people leave
- Taking the work so SERIOUSLY… like, y’all, we’re selling sausage, not saving the world. Chile
- “We’re a family here” 🚩🚩🚩
I probably have more but there ya go… thank you for asking for our POV🤗
👏👏👏👏
Lack of appreciation for hard work and only acknowledging senior members.
Senior leadership getting promoted once every 2 years and when I want a pay raise, I get push back.
Pressure to attend work events/happy hours. My entire career has been during the pandemic and now social situations make me anxious. I’m not comfortable being around so many people and I don’t drink but it feels like if you don’t attend you don’t want to make connections or get ahead.
This might just be my agency but lack of transparency on how to move up and grow in your role.
Being expected to speak for Gen Z but only when it's convenient for everyone else.
Separately I've also experienced a decent amount of age discrimination due to how quickly I've come into strategy. It's often linked to "paying your dues" as if I can't do research and pull insights because I haven't spent X years doing something unrelated agency-side.
The idea that to move ahead at all you have to do more work than you’re paid to do, it’s a weird social norm. Also I will not work weekends and I will not respond after 6 unless there is an emergency. Got burnt out with the pressure agencies put on juniors while wildly underpaying them in the first few years.
Following 👀
@MP&I1 - happily! I appreciate all you’re doing to support.
The first idea I start with: “everyone has mental health. Not everyone has a mental illness. They need to be cared for differently.”
So, work perks like meditation apps are great, but it’s really frustrating when an agency pats themselves on the back and calls themselves a mental health advocate.
Coverage to make therapy, medication, and other treatments affordable is critical.
Unlimited sick time goes a huge way - and normalizing not needing to specify sick versus mental health days. They’re the same.
Lastly, these are chronic issues and the ADA is massively underutilized in my opinion. These conditions have so much variability. I believe a person’s condition should stay private from their employer, because non-professionals have a very hard time understanding the nuances of neurodiverse life. A person should work with a provider they trust to develop a perspective on how they can stay healthy at work. Then that person can work with their employer on accommodations without having to go into the details of their condition.
What’s a GenZ really?
Ego, self-importance
