We get practical souvenirs such as a lion door knocker in Italy, a handmade scarf in Turkey, and nice wine corks in Greece. ect. Our theory is if we get a little nick knack it’s just gonna sit and collect dust until we toss it a year or so later. The trick is to go off the beaten path and shop where the locals do. Take a cab or car outside the main cities and find unique shops there to get your souvenirs!
We used to relocate a lot so we had to keep a very minimalistic rule when it came to impractical purchases. We would collect interesting postcards from our trips to put in frames.
We had a family member who did that, they had so many photo albums of places that he had been ( traveled for work) and it was always a post card from that town and 20-30 photos of things he found interesting. We kept all the post cards ( there were never any people in the photos just towns and nature) and now we have at least 500 post cards from the 70-80’s from all over the country, that we are not sure what to do with!
I love to get useable things for my house - or jewelry that I’ll wear again.
I usually get refrigerator magnets from the various countries and/or major cities that visit.
Skin care or oils, Jewelry, perfumes, hand made scarves, snacks, spices , coffee, tea. If nothing else a magnet from wherever lol
