Wow, I hadn't heard of them before, but now I need to go! They're incredible. Here's more info for anyone else who wants to check them out: https://www.finland-holiday.com/notes/glass-igloo-finland-note.php
I'm also really curious about whether or not anyone here has been, It seems like such a magical experience!
That my biggest dream ever! If I will asked in my deathbed what I want to before I die, I will say to be able to see the Northern lights. For me, that's the most magical thing that nature can offer.
All i can say is that it's a natural phenominon so there is absolutely no guarantee that you will see them. Those glass huts, whilst cool (and expensive), don't offer you any more of a chance of seeing the northern lights. It just means you can do it in relative comfort.
Personally I went to iceland for 8 days last month and spent about 24 cumulative hours over the trip standing outside in the cold, dark, wet and windy weather hunting the lights before I got a good display on one of my final nights.
The lights themselves are amazing. I was like a kid on christmas. However, manage your expectations because the colours are nowhere nearly as vibrant as what they appear in pictures (we see the light closer to greyscale due to the ways our eyes work in low-light conditions). I still believe that you can get a display as vibrant as it appears in pictures, but i suspect you need to be somewhere with no light pollution with the perfect amount of solar wind, cloud cover and humidity.
I would advise getting some very warm clothing and equipment and either doing Iceland or Tromsø in Norway. Both will still be very expensive (in true nordic fashion), but will be cheaper than the iglus.
There are plenty of good apps out there that deal with aurora forecasts and will even send you alerts when you have a high likelihood of seeing one. But it is still only statistics, i saw my best display at a 25% likelihood of aurora and a kp of 4 on a scale that goes 1 to 9.
Oh and absolutely get some form of tripod to let you do long exposure photography if you really want to capture the moment.
What!!!! No I haven't. Thank you so much M1 for the link. I have to admit that for years I thought the Northern Lights weren't really accessible and were similar to going to the south pole, in terms of the likelihood that you could see them. Thanks for putting this in my mind. And come to think of it, I wonder if anyone every schedules a wedding there to coincide...
Imagine doing some pretty nice psychedelics like shrooms while in one of those igloos watching the northern lights 🤌🏽
Wow! I have been meaning to visit Finland and watch the northern lights. Enjoy your vacation, OP!
I personally haven't been there before, but I have been dreaming of crossing it off of my bucket list. I came close to booking a trip there at one point but I had to prioritize some other things in my life. I picked out The Arctic Fox which is one of Finland's best domes in the glass igloo scene. It's right on the Arctic Circle with a private sauna, en suite bathroom, and a kitchenette.
That's at the Finnish Lapland! Stay at the Glass Resort in Rovaniemi. For each unit, you'll find floor-to-ceiling windows, sauna and a private outdoor hot tub. Can't get any better than that.
Oh my gosh! I've been dreaming about this for the longest time! Can anyone recommend this trip for honeymooners?
That is also a dream of mine. Been obsessed with the aurora borealis since I learned how to spell the world. It is such a majestic sight and I want my beau to propose to me during one.
I have seen those on social media but I have no clue where to book a stay there. Looks like a great honeymoon if you ask me. But for now I'll save up for such a trip with the wife
A great alternative to this is to see them in the south pole in New Zealand. I just love how nature formed this. Reminds me of that Brother Bear scene, you know the one.
Oh I've looked into it but it's just so pricey!! Has anyone done it? I was thinking of going to Alaska to catch the northern lights potentially
I recommend Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village. You can see the aurora from your room. It has great reviews as well.
Are these available during spring / summer months? Was thinking next month!
