I've dragged myself to several networking events recently, in hopes of meeting other insurance professionals. They're always the same, though... dozens of job seekers and maybe a couple of employed people in completely unrelated sectors. It feels like I'm wasting evenings I could spend applying to jobs instead. Am I wrong to think networking events are pointless?

A friend of mine works for her company at these events, and admitted that the majority of the time, they aren't there with the intention of hiring at all. It's marketing for them. Another way to make their name more recognizable. I'm not saying these events are pointless, but do go with the intent to meet others in your industry, not to find work. They may be unemployed now, but that won't last forever. You never know when a connection could help you in the future.

You're not wrong to feel burned out. I hire for my team, and I rarely go to those big open networking nights. They're usually too broad, and I never walk out with real connections. You might have more luck focusing on targeted outreach on LinkedIn or getting into a local insurance association where the membership skews toward people who are actually employed in the field.
