🖐🏼 Made the change about a year ago. There is a lot to learn it’s learning a whole new industry with new terms, legal requirements etc. but I’ve had a better work/life balance and it feels like a more secure job
Apart from work life balance, what else do you enjoy about it? Did you find that marketing principles in pharma and consumer overlap?
Moved last December. I work about 2 hours a day usually. Am senior now btw
All lies, work life balance can be worse than consumer if you land in the wrong account or working on a launch. (Which is more common than not)
Made the move for a year. Got a 20k pay raise. Never been so bored in my life.
I haven’t made the move but hire people who move from consumer advertising to Pharma advertising. Happy to chat about it.
Nice! Is there a special set of skills unique to pharma marketing that is different to consumer?
I know that most job ads say pharma marketing roles prefer pharma experience, but I like to think there are more open minded people out there willing to take a bet on people from outside the industry.
Both in house?
You can market to consumers in pharma there’s just a lot of what you can or can’t say. It’s all fairly balanced so patients aren’t misled in what the drug can do.
It depends on where you land in pharma. There’s so many facets. But what you can bet on is needing to learn a lot - it’s all quite technical and nuanced
If you’re in HCP promo, then definitely. Once I got a grasp on the science and how the treatment could change/save peoples lives, I naturally fell in love with it. Like I woke up and couldn’t wait to hear more about updated clinical trials, MOAs, what’s hot in congresses, the drug class and how my brand stood competitively
But besides the science, there are other technical items like purchasing permissions, how to work with and contract KOLs, MLR discussions, FDA submissions, fact checking, etc. it’s really it’s own discipline
It’s definitely an adjustment. It’s not nearly as fun. Very technical. I miss consumer facing and am trying to get back into it.
