I’ve had a few candidates who, after accepting our offer, come back to renegotiate terms before they start. It’s putting us in a difficult position. How do you handle and manage post-offer renegotiations effectively?

I feel the important question is , if industry standard pay for this role is $200k did you low ball the candidate? If so this is your time to course correct because they might leave once they get a better offer.

I suggest leading the conversation with “we do not typically engage in post-offer renegotiations,” and asking for the basis of their request. If they are claiming they have a better offer, ask for the offer specifics (and to see it if you feel comfortable doing so). Be prepared to compare apples to apples as much as possible, as well as highlight any unique benefits/advantages you offer. As others said, if you feel they’re worth it and it is within your range, let them know you will take their ask back to _____ for consideration to see if they are willing to make an exception (even if you’re the decision-maker) and consider if not the full ask, meeting them somewhere in the middle.

If there is no competing offer or they are unwilling to provide proof, let them know that the company does not engage in post-offer renegotiations and give them the option to take it or leave it.

Review it. If the candidate is worth having reconsider. If not. Say goodbye.

Are they using your offer to negotiate with another employer before coming back to you to start? That’s a tough situation depending on the roll. Remember a few 1000 over the entire year is not a hit, check your budget and make sure the candidate is a fit! If you get a bad feeling resend the offer and call the bluff as there are a ton of great candidates out there for the roll! No candidate is perfect, but if the perfect candidate costs you more it will save you over time.

Seems like a table being turned. Did you somehow underbid? Should you look at your offer compared to the candidate?

like

It is typical to renegotiate if there is experience, if not say I'm sorry we cannot negotiate, do you still accept the offer "as is".

like

Do you make a verbal offer before the official written offer? This is a great place to have the negotiation conversation. You can inform your candidate that you use the verbal offer to negotiate the package before it officially goes through your system and becomes a written offer. Once written it is no longer negotiable.
