Not a native (from the NE), but we moved here from Austin. I try not to compare anywhere to Austin because I don't believe it will stack up.
Raleigh and surrounding areas need more quality restaurants, infrastructure, and experiences.
A place we frequented when living in Austin was Georgetown, TX. 30 minutes north of Austin. They have a great downtown with plenty of local diverse restaurants with different atmospheres. The food scene is what makes places go and RDU lacks severely.
I’m in the exact opposite situation — we’re in Durham rn, but we’re considering a move back to Austin to be closer to family… From my POV, Raleigh-Durham weather is far superior — the 108 degree summers in Austin are no bueno. But agreed that the food scene in the Triangle is less impressive than ATX’s BBQ, TexMex and Breakfast taco triad.
I'm a native and thinking of leaving very soon. The surrounding towns/suburbs don't have the infrastructure to handle this increase in population. Specifically, the roads. The traffic is out of control. I also can't afford to own property with the housing market influenced/controlled by out of town investors and rent prices are through the roof. The same roads I grew up on now have Masteratis and Ferraris driving on them... I think the area grew too much, too fast. It's a great area but out of control. I'm sure it's great to newcomers.
Where you gonna go?
Not a native but definitely thinking seriously about moving. Housing market is crazy but I wouldn’t be so concerned if the area had more in terms of events, food and salary. It’s definitely lacking in a lot of areas. I can’t justify spending these prices on houses for an area where the food and event scene is so limiting.
We just bought a home in Fuquay. Out of most of the surrounding towns it allowed us to get 1.5 acres, it has room for growth from a downtown perspective (compared to other towns) and isn't too far out of the way.
