I don’t think it’s ever been enough.
take on highly visible work/projects and keep yapping about it to everyone
It doesn’t. I had an associate get credit for the work and initiatives I did and I ended up getting let go. Make sure you tell people what you have done.
Part of success at work is unfortunately performative. Those that do great work silently get left in the role. Those that toot their own horn without having the skills to back it up may move up initially but eventually they crash out, unless they continue to job hop before they are discovered for who they really are. Those that toot their own horn and do have the skills to back it up, well they become the superstars.
You were raised on a naive perspective
Absolutely not. I used to self promote a lot when I worked at a law firm, not only because I thought I deserved it since I was working hard to line my bosses pockets, but also to influence my bosses into processing my successes. I didn’t just talk about it though, I used to invite my senior attorneys to the hearings where I had done an insane amount of preparation so that i could actually show them.
OK, I just realized I am yapping right now. This was also financially driven and it did work out well for me.
