Of course we do. If we didn't like the firm then we wouldn't be there in this market. Talk to alum of the firm who left. 90% of what they say is true vs 20% of current associates.

I go on LinkedIn and search for people that worked there but left. Then I message them with some questions. A lot of people are willing to talk — and if they don’t respond it’s not a big deal.
Agreed - try to track down someone who previously worked there if possible and get their thoughts. Some people leave to make more money and some people leave because it was a cluster f* but you will know that from finding someone who previously worked there. If companies can call your previous employers to ask about you I don’t see what’s wrong with you trying to call previous employees to ask about the employer.
Anyone the firm puts you in contact with is someone the firm knows is going to say good things. They are either genuinely happy or very good liars. You aren’t going to find anyone to say something bad through official channels.
Double check the bar pass dates for the senior associates. If they have a lot of very senior people who haven’t made partner, ask to talk with them to get the inside scoop on what the partnership track really looks like. Also be on the lookout for a lot of people who left in the same year, or big gaps in their ranks (i.e. having no or disproportionately few mid-level associates is a pretty big red flag).
Really good points A2!
I was going to suggest perusing LinkedIn to find former associates of the firm to hear their opinions, but I’ve been beaten to the punch. Of course you will need to take alums’ views with a grain of salt as well since we don’t know the actual real reason why they left.
