Depends on the company but yes, the picture is usually brighter in private, and at times much brighter. Usually no timesheets, no having to sell work, no weekend work, much saner hours on the whole. Downsides are that it’s not that easy to advance up the ladder but if you lateral in at the position you want, then you could be sitting very pretty. Yes that might take some time to do, but usually the sooner you exit public once you’ve made manager, the better
What level are you in public accounting ?
Yeah, if you lateral over as an associate or even a senior, and think you are going to get promoted every couple of years and get fat raises… you are likely to be disappointed. You’ll be an unhappy camper when they bring in someone from PA over your head. I know because I’ve been that person who was brought in over someone who’d come over as a senior several years before.
The politics can be a lot worse. In PA, you usually have several people over you. If you’re not meshing with just one of them, you can sometimes maneuver a bit to work with others more, or at least make sure they have some input. In private, you usually have one person directly over you, and they pretty much control how things will go for you. It’s fine if they’re good. It’s hell if they decide that they don’t like you. Going over their head to your grand-boss can be a risky move and often won’t pay off. So before making a move, interview your potential direct manager well. Then hope that they don’t go anywhere for a while.
From what I understand the won is amazing but like they say here, promotion is hard so many tend to job hop for the next pay increase. This is what I’ve been reading from some forums I’m in. Take it for what it is though, secondhand info.
