Lateral somewhere else? Could be some good situation out there where an older partner is looking to retire.
You never know who will leave and when and why. Enjoy the training. Get involved in bar association type things outside the firm to expand your network so you can move easily when you’re ready.
What’s your practice area? Because there are two very different questions here: 1) “How do I get partners to give up a stranglehold on clients?” and 2) “how do I make rain?”
Based on the current legal market, the former, I imagine, is going to be rough. The market is getting harder for bigger firms and it’s getting harder to keep associates, so costs are probably increasing.
The latter is a multi-step process, but, among other things, centers on networking where the CLIENTS are.
What kind of litigation and for what kind of clients? Insurance defense means you should be going to conferences like Combined Claims and joining professional organizations for insurance reps, adjusters, and so on. If you do antitrust, pick the indistr(ies) you want to work in and find their trade groups and networking groups. Go to local events first, then once you have ten or fifteen local friends figure out what the best national event or two are and go to that. When you go, buy a lot of drinks, drink less than you buy, be friendly, look for people with lots of friends and try to get them to introduce you.
Litigation is broad, I can’t tell you how to connect with everyone. But if you direct the same analytical and problem solving skills that a JD is supposed to provide to “how do I meet people in X industry?” You might get some solutions. If not, you can always ask more specific questions either here or in another post.
I feel this so much. And I have no answers yet.
