I mean, it's always nice to get a head start when something is brand new. You can hit the algorithm and do really well on a platform. My sister-in-law has 5 million followers on social media just because she started out really, really early and figured out the algorithm really fast. However professionally, I'm not going to participate in every new app that comes out. It's just not a great use of our time, in my opinion.
Eh. If you've got all your other bases covered, I guess it could be worth looking into. But I'm inherently skeptical of every new social media platform. Most of the recent ones I can think of were popular for all of a month before people lost interest. I wouldn't want to invest too much time on building content for an unproven platform.
For content creators and influencers, it sounds promising in terms of the splits. My only concern is that it grows, and those splits aren’t as favorable. Something worth watching as it launches.
Own definitely sounds interesting, especially with the idea that you really “own” your content and that people get rewarded just for engaging. As a content creator, I get why that’s appealing. But with so many TikTok alternatives out there—like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and some newer ones like Skylight and Bluesky—it’s worth thinking about where your audience already hangs out. I’d suggest trying Own out alongside the platforms you’re already using instead of switching over completely. That way, you can see if it really clicks without losing the momentum you’ve built elsewhere.
I haven't heard of this but now I am kind of intrigued and want to check it out. I think it could be really cool and it would be fun to get in on the ground floor. Definitely going to look this up.
For the record, you own all content you post to TikTok too, you just give them unrestricted rights to also use your content as part of the TOS.
I read about Own too and it sounds really cool. The coolest part being that engagement pays too, so it's not just the creators who make money, it's also the people who engage with the content.
If I had a dime for every time, a social media app popped up claiming to be replacing TikTok or to be the next Instagram I could’ve retired like six years ago. I’ll believe it when I see it. I think I’ve got at least six apps on my phone that we’re supposed to be the next big thing that never really hit so we’ll see.
