Perhaps start by asking to be looped into product meetings? At my company (and for this specific assigned product line) we have biweekly product release meetings with product, sales and support, training, and product marketing managers. Keep an ear open for the product marketing manager’s updates, and maybe connect with them offline for opportunities where you can dive in and help on their projects, which are often content marketing deliverables.
There should also be product training “certifications” you could look into at your company. I’m currently looking into this as a product marketing specialist, as part of the training is being able to pitch the product as though you’re in a sales role. It gives insight into not only the product but the positioning strategy that product marketing employs to advance the sales enablement piece. Could be helpful to get you thinking like a product marketer, ultimately showing a product marketing manager that you have that capability, and even took the initiative to grow in that way.
