We have a Google form. All we have to type is the kids name, the rest is just two clicks of a mouse. I can do that while I teach. Admin then picks up the phone within 20ish minutes. I don’t even tell the kid I am writing them up. It’s always a shock to them that they don’t think I saw. So far it’s working great.

I may have to try this. I know we have documenting strategies, but they do not have as fast of a response at our school.
I just tell the kids to put their phones away and they usually do. I'm not going to get too carried away worrying about it, to be honest. I try not to make too many rules because then you have to enforce them, and that becomes your job. I'd rather try to keep them interested enough in what we're doing that the phones stay in their pockets, or at least don't become a major distraction.

I like the idea of having less rules, and trying to keep the kids busy and engaged.
This really is like one of the toughest parts of teaching these days. In general I’ve found that setting clear boundaries at the start of class helps, even if it's a quick reminder. It’s frustrating when admin doesn't back you up, though. Have you tried enforcing a "no phone, no consequences" rule for a day to see if it shakes things up?

Please explain what the "no cellphones, no consequences" policy is.
I’ve tried setting clear phone-free expectations at the start of class, but when a student slips up, it’s tough to keep track of who’s on task and who’s not. I end up spending so much time writing up infractions or dealing with phone distractions that I barely have enough time to teach. I even tried setting phone 'zones' where they can use them for quick tasks, but it's not the same as having full control over the classroom environment.

This is exactly how I feel about the strategies that we are expected to follow. There's not enough time to teach lessons, redirect, follow a behavior matrix, ext. Please just let me teach.

In Indiana it is the law that they are not supposed to have their phone during academic instruction. However, I know their are teachers who allow them to have their phones.
