Last month, I interviewed for a management role that looked perfect on paper. Bigger title, better pay, real growth. But every conversation felt rushed, like they wore exhaustion as a badge of honor. At the same time, I was covering shifts with a team that cared but didn’t always match my drive. It made me pause. Is moving up worth it if you lose your life outside work? Or is the right team the real promotion?

It's a tradeoff, same as anything else. If moving up gives you a big pay jump, that can affect your quality of life just as much as the current WLB you enjoy does. I wouldn't leap for extra work if I was happy with my salary AND WLB, but I'd do it if I wasn't satisfied with pay. I'd rather be burned out from work than from financial stress.

Depends on how much of your life you’re giving up….there has to be a limit. However, for more pay and a title, you’d have to be ready for more work and responsibility.

To whom much is given much more is expected.

Culture matters more than title in the long run. If leadership is glorifying exhaustion, that is a preview of the future. A bigger title does not mean much if your entire life becomes work. The right team and balance can absolutely be the real upgrade.

Got sort of an exploding offer on hand. Verbal only so far and requiring decision by Monday pretty firm. Have 3 more processes ongoing in mid-late stages and expect to wrap up probably next week. Gut feeling is I want to take the company who gave the exploding offer though. Any advice on how I can respectfully wrap up other processes/ask for extension?

Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.
