Looking for advice: how do you go about following up with contacts after networking? I’m a baby lawyer, admitted during Covid and have very minimal networking experience. I met someone at an event who offered to help me get a job with their firm. I’m interested but not sure how to go about reaching out again. TIA

Connect on LinkedIn. Ask if you can buy them a cup of coffee and pick their brain for 15 minutes. Do as much research as you can on their background, what areas they specialize in, etc. Assuming you have an interest in what they do, express it. When hiring I look for curiosity first. If your initial conversation was more detailed and you think you’re already to the point where the person knows who you are and wants to help you could just send a resume. But trying to create a connection might help.

Follow up via email. Their work email should be on their website. Email and explain how you enjoyed meeting them and put in something specific you enjoyed about the conversation. Say you hope to discuss any opportunities with them. You could also send a resume and ask if they are interested in getting coffee soon.

Is life insurance a priority to anyone at the moment, and if so why is life insurance important to you?

It can be impossible to deal with financial losses due to declining health or unforeseen circumstances by not having life insurance. In these cases, the solution to your debts (that can affect the financial stability of you or your loved ones) may fall within the category of life insurance.

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.
