Maybe an unpopular opinion, but does anyone keep it to themselves a bit if you are having a quiet period? I feel a bit guilty even admitting it, but its so chaotic 24/7, that if I do ever have a down period, I try not to tell anyone so I can actually have a bit of downtime!

The quiet times never last long, so I don’t even want to ring that bell. I do try to move around and see if anyone else needs some assistance. That is usually taken advantage of, so I really need to watch it.

That's exactly why I don't offer anymore! I moved jobs and decided that I was going to stop doing it, for that reason

Oh, not unpopular AT ALL. I literally require quiet times and when I don't get them at work, I make sure I get them at home. I used to feel guilty about it, too, but once I hit my 40s, I really noticed how badly I need them, and I have zero issues cancelling plans and staying in.

100%, you have to have your 'me time'. Its so necessary! I take all the downtime I can these days!

I don't think it's unpopular. I have had quiet periods and haven't announced it. Some people notice but only those I talk to daily.

I feel like those are the people that won't mind you having a bit of down time too usually

When things slow down a bit I get very anxious, but in some ways I appreciate the slower pace while it lasts. And I learned years ago never to speak up and say I'm not super busy. If you let it be known you're not busy you are tempting the gods, and trust me, something will happen to make you very busy indeed.

I used to feel the same way with the anxiety during quiet periods. Now I have learnt to embrace it and use it to my advantage! Absolutely, people will always have something to throw on you, so I will never go out my way to say I am quiet anymore!

I think I have watch enough tv or experienced it myself where once you bring it up, the opposite happens. (The second she is gonna drop).

I have learned if I can anticipate where the lulls are, I can schedule some time off. If I don’t get a 3-day weekend in once a month, work just gets more something… that even a snicker candy bar can get me out of hangry mode.

Anticipating the lulls are and using it for your advantage is actually a really great idea!

Definitely, they don’t come around often!

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?
