Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I’ve been trying to get into the top tier Associate Product Marketing Manager position Google for some time now for just an interview and I feel like business majors somehow have such a stronger chance in getting interviewed especially my business school and I feel really discouraged as an Econ Major and I have a lot of marketing experience that I’ve built over the years. Are there any non-business majors in the tech realm in non technical positions at Google that can advise me?

unlikely if it is your starter job…i would ask questions around when and how comp is raised in first year and aim to be that candidate. McK doesn’t pay top of the band salaries to begin with but growth opportunities are meaningful
Entry level jobs in general are pretty inflexible. Here’s your offer. Don’t like it? We’ll replace you.

You should rescind and look for a job that pays more
This is not how the world works
Even at a different company you wouldn’t be eligible for a raise before you even start working. Also, you’ve already signed the offer which mean you’ve already agreed to all the terms within it - asking for changes on the offer after you’ve signed is very bad faith
And finally, inflation is not some data that it’s released every year at the end of the year. It’s released every month. And the big jumps in inflation last year likely happened before you even got your offer. So if there were any adjustments you already got them.
No, salary is very standardized they won’t just give one person a raise unless you’re pretty high up - in that case it might be possible
Yes inflation may be making COL materially more difficult for many. I don’t think that’s the case for our profession. Even so, you don’t know if the comp you’re seeing was already adjusted for inflation, do you?

Compensation in general isn’t determined based on inflation. You’re paid based on labor supply/demand and I doubt that’s changed meaningfully for entry-level talent in the few months since you signed.
I received a raise at a previous job before starting but that was due to the labor market adjusting salaries for that type of position upward (in the year between signing and starting). But McK entry-level wages are not negotiable and you’d only get a bump if we decided to bump everyone in that role.
McK just adjusted its salaries within the last year. Until they adjusted the manager (EM) level comp at EOY, new asc hires were almost making more than I was ~4yrs into the firm. New hires especially are being very well compensated. Our policy for hiring classes (BA / ASC) is to pay the same in the US regardless of your office.
This, and said more kindly (looking at most mck replies here) yes inflation was taken into account across the pay scale. Welcome!
Man this guy is only replying to ppl from McKinsey, definitely won't get far
Congrats!
McK2- Extremely grateful for my opportunity! It’s nothing like that. Not trying to be greedy, just trying to take my cost of living into account. Just heard about other people doing it so was curious.
McK1- thank you!!! I definitely agree with the growth opportunity
McK3- thank you!
Well, Deloitte did bump all offerees up before they started, but that's because we were paying much less than McKinsey. I don't think it gets better than that.
I think you should ask! I am starting in Audit in the fall, which is a field that usually pays pretty low compared to other business roles and my company gave us a market adjustment of around 8% for our starting salary
Intern 1- thank you! Wasn’t looking at my comments because I was getting a lot of negative responses. I thought this was a place to ask questions in more of a judgement free zone but was feeling discouraged after seeing comments, hence wasn’t really opening the app yesterday. I wish you nothing but the best on your career journey!
McK6- I appreciate that!
CalPoly1- thanks for the advice! I received my offer over 6 months ago and I heard people were getting market adjustments so I was curious.
McK7 & EngMgr1- thanks for your advice!
Deloitte1- I appreciate your perspective!
McK4- I appreciate your thought on this. Was curious because people were getting market adjustments. Sorry if I offended you!
McK5- thanks! I signed my offer over 6 months ago and won’t start in my role for another 6 months. I heard people were getting market adjustments so I was just curious.
