As a consultant who was on the industry side, I can say that most people on the consulting side have very little understanding of the industry...
As a soon to be MBB ex-consultant, many have the most rudimentary understanding! I started working with someone who did not know the central dogma leading healthcare cases. They learn everything from one analyst report and act like they know it all. It
I can confirm this…as generalists, we don’t get to do very many biopharma projects as opposed to those who are at life sciences boutique firms…yet we are recruited into pharma strategy roles because of the MBB name attached to us…
The consultants I know are easily the team members with the least value add. They don’t know how to actually do anything.
Also Abbvie’s Innovation team was born out of MBB consulting and now they are dispersing!
One of Abbvie’s innovation teams started with a partner at McKinsey during engagement and then they hired him as internal strategy role. Since then he has expanded the team and hired many other ex-MBB consultants. This is just one of the teams I know. There are also corporate strategy teams that seem to have grown quite a lot like this (perhaps started with some one from a different firm). I worked at Abbvie previously.
I work in business development and in my function I think the people most capable of taking a high level view and breaking down a problem into concrete actionable steps tend to have consulting backgrounds. I've hired one former consultant and would happily do so again for a similar role.
We are talking about ex-MBB consultants, their entry level into the company is higher than your current title. We are probably talking about different group of people.
