Any professional engineers turned professors here? What drove you to make that switch and did it work out how you thought it would?

I needed a new field to work in and being a professor seemed very enticing. Overall, I really enjoy it, but that's me. It definitely depends on who you are and what you expect.

Tried it, didn't work for me. Too mcuh stress and I went back to my usual engineering work. I am now part of a think tank.

Many universities like MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Harvard and Northwestern have faculty members from a wide range of engineering disciplines such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. These academics have earned their professional engineering credentials through experience in the field or additional studies at an accredited university.

I think it's a good path. These professors often have several years of research experience in their respective fields before joining a university or college.

I know Professor Alan W. Cramb is a professor of Engineering Technology at Penn State University who has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and worked as an engineer for ten years prior to his move into academia. He is also an internationally renowned expert in advanced manufacturing systems and automation with extensive experience collaborating with industry and government on research projects.

I'm not a converted professional as such, because I still work as an engineer but I have a few hours at the university, it's something I've always wanted to do but I also love my main job, what's a major difference? So you have more freedom to be yourself.

Many people who are dedicated to education do not say it, but it is something you have to live with, when you are a good teacher and your students respect you, you come to love what you do because you are an extremely important person in the lives of many people and we all We like to feel like this, it is one of the things that led me to change the direction of my career.

If I feel that it worked, I really needed to slow down my life for my family and myself, and now I can say that many of my students have become friends, that is, my family has grown in the world.

I had my own Consulting Firm. I closed it during COVID to teach my children. I started working as an adjunct Professor in Mechanical Engineering. I love sharing my passion for Engineering and real life use of the courses with the students. I have taught/teach 5 courses.

I always smile. I want the students to remember the course and not hate the professor! I never filled out a survey in any of my classes. I am astonished by the kindness this students write!
