First of all, it's not a freedom of speech issue. That applies to government suppression of speech. As a private company, Facebook can moderate the content on their platform if they choose to. They've caving in to the people who want to spread disinformation. Facebook has been a cesspool of disinformation for years, so I don't know if this will change much. But it's offensive to see them caving in to pressure from the incoming administration.
“Critical health information” = “vaccines are bad!” memes
Neither the soon-to-be-former president nor the incoming president is putting Mark Zuckerberg in prison—especially not the one he’s giving a million dollars to and appointing his bestie to the Meta board. Get a grip.
Have you been on X lately? It is a cesspool of misinformation. Community notes is not working.
Taking a community notes approach to fact checking has worked way better on Twitter. This is a good thing, but don’t trust Zuck. He’s only doing this so he doesn’t go to prison for what he did for the Biden admin during Covid. He’s a snake that will do whatever he needs to cover his ass.
Facebook is a platform not a publisher. While we may not agree with what others post, in the US we have freedom of speech and the platform should not be infringing upon said freedom of speech.
To answer the question, no I didn’t pay attention in school but I’m still doing okay now. To respond to your comment: this was an off cuff first thought response to the situation when the news just came out, you are indeed correct that private companies are free to do as they please. After further listening to Zuckerberg’s explanations and how fact checking grew to stifle voices not just in the US but globally, I applaud him. Wasn’t a zuck fan before but he’s been trying to figure this out for years and on a global scale. He has half of the world’s population monthly using one of his products— that’s a beast to manage and he admitted where things went wrong. I think there will be a better way forward and his team has been putting in years of work to get here so can only hope for the best for the sake of all the global users.
I mean, is it really a social media platforms place to decide what is annd isn’t true? No other social media platforms do this. look at all the junk that gets published on TikTok, so I could see why they are pulling back on our moderation, especially since Facebook’s algorithm and third-party moderator. We’re getting to be so severe. I’ve seen the most benign content get locked out so I’m hoping this is for the better.
Yes, they actually were censoring doctors well within their scope to treat patients in their practices. . There was multiple therapeutics available that were helping sick people avoid the hospital. Those were censored completely and the doctors were deplatformed, or else they wouldn’t have had the ammo to make the vaccines EUA. To be EUA requires no other available therapeutics.
In a time where not much was known, these therapies should have been available to try and treat sick people because they were working. More lives could’ve been saved. It’s the responsibility of our government to shed light on all available options, not mandate 1. The whole point of scientific study is to try new things and find out paths that work. To do that you need varying thought processes and testing. To completely disallow that to happen is extremely anti-science.
