My firstborn turns 17 next week, and he is not a planner so I cannot get him to give me any ideas of how to celebrate

I am not taking him to get a tattoo which is the only idea he has presented

He is active, loves sports, and this is specifically for the weekday birthday day

Give me your most unhinged birthday idea for celebrating the last year of your son being a kid at home

If he likes tattoos and that’s the only thing that really resonates why not see if there is a temporary tattoo or henna studio near you? I’m in Chicago and there’s a studio that specializes in flash tattoos that last 30-90 days and fade completely.
Non-tattoo, unhinged ideas for teens: all nighter family night- midnight movie, late night drive fast food through, “drinking game” competition (think beer pong and flip cup but with soda); fortnight Olympics; favorite things day; movie marathon day with themed snacks and meals… I just scrolled Pinterest as well and there’s lots of great ideas there

I’ve definitely seen videos online of people with “flash tattoos” that last for years. Great idea but definitely vet the business before doing it.

Unhinged? If he’s into soccer, get tickets to a match somewhere in Europe for the coming season, buy the flights and hotel, and blow it out in a dope European city for a weekend.

Requires some heavy lifting over the next few days but can be done. Friend went to England for a weekend a few years ago and went to 4 matches!

But also, if he’s “not a planner,” so much so that he doesn’t even have ideas for his 17th birthday … what’s the long term game plan there? This seems like a pretty critical life skill that he should start developing now, or you’ll be planning his vacations for him when he’s 40.

So just a one-day weekday special birthday day? Do you have all day or just the evening? Some ideas - local amusement park, professional baseball game, bowling/mini-golf/arcade, go for a hike, go to an indoor climbing wall, waterpark. I mean, my kid likes capybaras and I just found out there's a rescue an hour from our house where you can go cuddle them, so I know what we're doing for a special birthday surprise. But I'd suggest anything that's spending time together.
