To be clear, I'm not trying to crowdsource medical advice... I am more trying to understand and get recommendations on how to work with a VA who is not motivated to help. Every aspect of my health care has been like this and they take 3-6 months for any appointments or will take 3 months to get it approved for community care anyway.
I had similar experiences with my VA but with even longer referral timelines. When I was a student I bought student health insurance and have used my work health insurance since I started working. It cost me but at least I was able to seen.
What state are you located in? My other question is if you travel, can you use a VA in that area? I know the current regime just ripped a lot out of the VA, is that affecting wait times to be seen?
Texas and I dont think you can travel and see a specialist, not where your primary residence is.
On your other question, this has nothing to do with politics; this VA has been like this for the past 5 years. It took me 4 months to get a mental health referral and 6 to actually be seen. I only call that out as another example because thats something you'd expect should be higher on their priority list (like heart problems) but isn't.
Ive had the same thing happen then I went to a chiropractor and haven't had any issues since.
But then again. My VA WONT EVEN LOOK AT ME OR GIVE ME A NEW CARD, MINES FROM BACK I. THE 80s because I make to much money. Sad when your a vet and can't get an vet ID because you make to much money.
Ya pretty messed up typing 🤣
Are you able to try and use community care? Or community whatever it’s called. I had success with having the VA pay to send me to a separate treatment facility for something that they didn’t have capability to handle at their own VA but I understand this also can work if the waitlist is excessive. In my case it was for an eating disorder and the Va didn’t have that kind of program. They paid for everything and got me in fast.
Yeah community care is actually the only way I get any of these appointments within 6 months.
More the problem is my primary owns all referrals. They did one test then kind of gave up and don't know what to do or who to refer me to next. Their words "I'll have to think about that". So now the onus is on me to like pitch treatment options or I just have to live with it until they get done thinking about it and reach back out (99% certain they won't).
