Navigating the promotion ladder at a state agency has been tougher than I expected. I’ve put in five years, taken on leadership roles in projects, and even completed extra certifications, but promotions still feel painfully slow and often tied more to seniority than performance. I’m trying to stay patient but also be strategic about my next steps. Does anyone have success stories or tips for advancing your career within government? What actually helped you break through and move up?

Networking internally and taking on visible, cross-departmental projects made a big difference for me. It’s not just about doing good work—it’s about making sure the right people see it. Being proactive about professional development and having open conversations with supervisors about your goals can also help position you for the next step.

Find the people there that will help you, mentor you, put in a good word for you. There has to be that level of you know how to do the job, doing it well, but there is for most places that aspect of who you know. Sometimes it is a waiting game too.

No one likes to admit it, but a lot of things come down to office politics. And by politics I don't mean some Machiavellian plotting, I just mean being personable and keeping yourself visible where it matters. If you're involved in a project that's worthwhile, do what you can to make people realize that. Don't be content to let your work, and yourself, gather dust in the shadows. There's a degree of tact required, you don't want to come off as a self-promoter. But you also don't want to be overlooked despite your good work. Remember, if you don't do a little self-promotion, nobody else will do it for you.

I second this.

Oh man, I relate to this so much. I spent years doing “above and beyond” work without movement. I think what eventually helped me was finding a mentor higher up and being vocal about my goals. Also, applying for openings in other departments gave me a fresh start with new eyes on my work and helped me make some new connections. Sometimes lateral moves are the way to go if you're feeling stuck

Government orgs often default to seniority, but what helped me break through was visibility. I made sure leadership knew about the impact I was making. Also, building relationships with key decision-makers mattered more than I expected. You have to play the long game, but you can still play it smart.

Looking for a remote/hybrid/onsite (Calgary,Alberta) job for my boyfriend who got almost 5 years of experience in proposal writing, RFP, RFI and bid management for a civil engineering firm. He also got an MBA, non drinker, non smoker, clean driving abstract and very polite. He gave out tons of cv in indeed job posters for the past 5 months, ends up becoming the filler candidate, took a huge toll in his mental health and we are going through some very rough patches. Can anyone please kindly help?
