Here’s what I understand to be the general take for the major neighborhoods.
FiDi - Mostly young professionals (finance/consulting). Used to be a dead neighborhood but good amount of development recently (eg south street seaport, oculus)
Battery Park - Families. Lots of families.
TriBeCa - Wealthy families and celebrities. Some good/high end restaurants.
SoHo - Used to be the neighborhood for starving artists, now no starving artist could afford to live there. Shopping district of NYC.
East Village: College Students/20s mostly. Lots of bars - might be the highest concentration of bars in the city.
West Village: Known for the trendier restaurants/boutique shopping. “Friends” neighborhood. No skyscrapers. Desirable location to live but expensive as hell.
Chelsea: Also lots of bars/restaurants/nightlife. Desirable area for young professionals but very pricey. Lots of brunch spots (along with west village).
Murray Hill - Generally known to be very fratty / filled with finance “bros”. Good Indian restaurants.
Hells Kitchen - Lots of young professionals live here as the real estate is a bit more “affordable”. Combination of luxury apartments/walk ups. As the name suggests, lots of restaurants. Kind of dirty area in general though…
Times Square: Suburban chain restaurants. Stereotypical NYC tourists. Elmos.
Upper West Side: Families/young professionals - almost the suburbs of NYC. Generally quieter vibe than the rest of Manhattan. Lots of underrated restaurants here.
Upper East Side (west of Lexington): Old money NYC.
Upper East Side (east of Lexington): Families and young professionals. Good Japanese food can be found here.
