Dear legal recruiters who used to work as attorneys: are you glad you made the switch? I think recruiting could be fun but I know how much I ignore recruiter emails daily so it makes me think it’s touch to place people and make a consistent income. Thoughts?

I needed flexibility in my schedule and something that would still provide a potential 6 figure income. Recruiting was natural for me, since I was heavily involved with lateral recruiting and OCI at my firm.

I am very happy I made the switch. However, many of the people I started with are no longer recruiting. This job is tough, especially for high performing individuals who aren't used to taking "no" a hundred times a day and being ignored. The inconsistency in pay checks, especially in your ramp up is also hard to deal with.

But the pay when things go your way, and the feeling you get when helping someone land a big come up is amazing. I do not regret getting into this field, I hate cold calling but networking and business development comes very naturally.

This has been super helpful. Thanks so much for all of your comments!

Seems if you place 5 people at market comp you're making a big law salary, at least from straight 20% annual salary commission. Curious how the split is between the recruiter and their agency.

I was told the fee is equal to 3 months salary. Seems consistent with the above range.

This year I quit my job before I had a new one. I can’t describe how awful this 2.5 year experience was. It was my first job in a new industry & I was at a director level. I recently took a job with a company I’ve always dreamed to work for (in my previous industry) at a manager level. Step down but still higher pay. It’s night and day different. I’m so happy. So much so that I’m not fully processing just how miserable I was and it’s messing w/me. Advice on recovering from a previous toxic job?

I've been told by a recruiter that it's not a deal breaker because of my experience level. But many colleagues have suggested I remain where I'm at (miserable and unappreciated - just took a $20k pay cut) for at least a year.

Does it mean anything specifically when a company/firm reposts their position? I went on a phone screen and it went really well (so I thought) and got the interview with a AmLaw200 firm. There have been a lot of posts in the law and big law blog about legal recruiter comp. It seems to range a lot (saw second-hand info from $60k to over a million). Also saw someone say the “average” recruiter makes more than a 5th year biglaw associate (which I think would mean $400k+). Can anyone provide ballpark numbers? Considering eventually moving to recruiting, but couldn’t leave to do it for $60k.
